The urban shaman can used as a modern term for ancient traditional healing methods of our ancestors. Blending together the ancient magical practice and contemporary methods to bring deeper meaning to our lives.
Whilst many people have found that deeper connection, many others blindly live their lives through the eyes of other. Many flounder in between, sensing that there is something more to life but have no idea where to turn.
So, the urban shaman brings the wisdom of our ancestors to meet with the demands of our overwhelmed psyche. They hold the ability and skill to heal through all aspects of ourselves. The physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual.
One thing is for sure, we are emerging through a time of worldwide awakening. Never has there been more of a need for shamanic healing practices. Here I delve a little deeper into the meaning of the urban shaman and how they fit into our world today.
Urban Shamans Live Within Our Communities
An indigenous shaman, for example, live in the depths of the jungle or the foot of the Himalayas. Urban shamans live within our modern towns, cities or villages. Working from home, or from a healing centre of some kind, some work with clients out in nature.
Shamanism is practised by people who may not originate in a traditional indigenous society per se, yet have a deep reverence towards traditional methods.
Way back in their ancestral lineage there may well have been a shaman within their tribe. This way of life has been awakened within them in some form for them to serve the modern communities of today.
Shamans, urban or traditional have either been called to service, have been initiated or are chosen at birth
An individual is called to service when they have had a very serious illness, or near-death experience, or are visited by spirits. They are said to have known death and returned from it and they can become shamans from this experience.
In the modern world, this can also mean a life that has experienced much pain, trauma or suffering. Yet the individual has healed from these experiences. In other words, they have that hidden secret of life not attained by others.
When an individual is initiated into this work, prospective shamans undergo what is known as “shamanic initiation.” This happens through courageously enduring circumstances that enable them to face all of their fears. A real shaman demonstrates immense strength and healing in this process.
In many tribes and some modern-day families, shamans are chosen before birth. It is said that Spirit chose to incarnate itself as a shaman before it was even born into physical existence. A shaman is known by the spiritual elders of a tribe as he or she is born.
This can happen in today’s society too, but sadly may not be recognised as such immediately.
Individuals may have followed a life governed by the need to appease family tradition, to become an engineer or doctor for example. Yet their heart is screaming for a different life.
Desperately unhappy, they may find themselves on the brink of a mental breakdown or suffering ill health. Eventually, they may break free from others’ expectations and find their true shamanic path and destiny.
For the lucky ones, shamanic abilities may also be passed down ancestrally. The young shaman will then grow to be guided and trained by the elder shaman.
A modern-day shaman or indeed any shaman, is a person who has attained a certain level of higher consciousness,
Shamans are witness to great healing and transformation and therefore have a big responsibility towards their clients health and well-being during sessions.

Ancient healing practices that weave into the modern world
Shamans come in many forms. All have a similar ability to see or sense that which is hidden. They teach that everything is energy, or in other words, everything in existence has a spiritual aspect. This spiritual aspect means a sense of connection to something bigger than ourselves.
Our ancestors knew so much about life, the natural and spiritual world. Without modern technologies, life was governed by nature and spirit. The rising and setting of the sun, the full and new moon, by the stars and the seasons. Urban shamans are also connected to our natural world, drawing wisdom from nature just like our ancestors.
Shamans know that every health issue, mental, physical, or emotional has its cause in the spiritual essence. If required, medicine would be prescribed in the form of a plant, or ritual to rid dark energies.
Whilst other methods include connecting with unseen spirits and beings through divination as a method to give clarity and direction to situations.
“Honoring the world of form and spirit; surrendering to endless death and rebirth; this is the source of all healing — the shaman’s power”.
There are many forms of shaman healers. Some use plant medicine, specialising in herbs, and nutrition. Others focus on the body through energy healing.
Re-programming the mind and releasing deep routed emotions is another skill. Some even specialise in dealing with darker forces. There are seers, otherwise known as psychics that enable a person to be guided to clarity.
These are not your everyday natural health therapists, psychics, energy healers, psychologists (no disrespect intended). These are people that have attained a higher level of awareness, knowledge, perception and consciousness. An ability to connect with the higher vibrational energies, that are not of this physical reality.
A true shaman has the ability to move within other realms of reality. To repair lost souls. To heal physical wounds from the past and present. To clear mental and emotional energy blocks and bring back balance and harmony to life.
As above, so below, so within, so without
Dr Randolph Stone
A shaman is adept to apply wisdom from the spiritual realms in order to transform the physical realm.
This is what differentiates shamans from other spiritual healers. Transmuting disturbed energies that will have a real impact in the physical realm is a mark of a true shaman.
A medium, for example, can access these realms, but they lack the physical action while there. Shamans access these other realms to affect change in the physical.

“Jane is a through and through healer. I think anyone and everyone that is going or has gone through any type of trauma or experience needs help.
Jane uses a combination of shamanism, polarity therapy, talking, sound healing is powerful healing.
Jane’s skills that she has spent her lifetime connecting with, I couldn’t recommend more, they come together as an intuitive healing spiritual toolkit.
Jane’s hands seem to feel my pain and energy stagnation, she relaxes me. Also the sound that Jane makes hits me deep in my gut, sometimes like a strong twang, – so powerful and also all over my body”. C.D Lymington, UK
Family Relationship Issues
“I felt such a physical shift during today’s session. Jane did a lot of sound healing and clearing. The sounds were so powerful and the vibrations resonated through me.
I felt physical release when she did the clearing actions. Afterwards I noticed my voice was softer and deeper and I felt I had a lot of strength from within.
I am finding this work so beneficial and I can’t thank Jane enough for holding space for me and guiding me through this transition and transformation”. R. H Lymington, UK
